Triarthrus eatoni from the famous Beecher’s Trilobite Bed, Upper Ordovician, Frankfort Shale, Lewis County, New York.

Amazing cluster of six Triarthrus eatoni trilobites, all with soft tissue preservation of legs and antennae. Two of these trilobites are dorsal (right side up), the other four are in ventral (upside down) position. The large dorsal on this plate is huge, measuring 4cm which is approaching the maximum size for this species.  Two ventral triarthrus are partially situated beneath the large dorsal.  Three undetermined species of sac-like demosponges are also present on this plate.  These demosponges are extremely rare.

The large branching structure on this plate is a chondrites trace fossil.  Chondrites are infilled burrows left behind by scavengers looking to feed on detritus or the carcasses of buried animals like these trilobites.  The chondrites in this case have moved between the antennae of one trilobite, splitting them, which may be one of the only examples of trace fossils contacting soft tissues in the fossil record.  A small crustacean, a Luprisca incuba ostracod is also present on this plate.  This is an amazing piece of history

Additional Information

Discovered in 1892 by William S. Valiant and made famous by the work of Charles Emerson Beecher, "Beecher's Trilobite Bed" is located in a small quarry outside of Rome, New York. It is a 4cm thick layer of shale that has yielded some of the most spectacular fossils ever found. The most revered is Triarthrus eatoni, an Upper Ordovician trilobite from the Frankfort Shale of the Lorraine Group. The trilobite bed is a Konservat-Lagerstätte with exceptional soft tissue preservation of antennae, appendages and occasionally egg broods preserved near the underside of the cephalon. There exist only a few sites around the world that preserve this level of detail.
For the last 15+ years the quarry has been owned and managed by Markus Martin, founder of Gold Bugs. Not only is Markus the owner of Gold Bugs, he is the recognized expert on the preparation of fossils from this site.
