Greenops grabaui
Vendor: Gold Bugs
SKU Number: SQ5170835
A Beautiful complete prone Greenops grabaui from the Middle Devonian, Hamilton Group of Western N.Y. This example has a dark spotted patterning over a light creamy-brown carapace with darker coloring towards the ends of the genal, pleural and pygidial spines. The spots are probably related to camouflage. The eyes have a much darker appearance than the rest of the trilobite which really makes them standout. Trilobites of this quality are unusual due to the patterning and lighter color. Most Hamilton group trilobites are much darker - almost black - on a gray shale.

Additional Information
Greenops Grabaui
Greenops had schizocroidal eyes (resembling compound eyes in insects), large genal spines and short, sharp spines at the tip of each segment of the pygidium ("tail"). Greenops lived in warm, fairly deep water. In the Hamilton Group of New York, they are found with Eldredgeops, Dipleura and Bellacartwrightia, a trilobite that resembles Greenops but has much larger pygidial spines. In Ontario, they are found in the Widder Formation, which outcrops at Arkona, where they are, by far, the dominant trilobite.
