SKU Number: SQ4784868

A rare and complete specimen of Isoxys with soft tissue preservation, from the Early Cambrian, Shipai Formation, Yichang City, Hubei Province, China.

Isoxys is a Burgess Shale-like fauna. It was a pelagic bivalved arthropod thought to have been a free-swimming predator. They have been shown to have large spherical eyes with grasping frontal appendages.

This specimen is about 15.10 mm in length with signs of soft tissue preservation. Internal soft tissue preservation includes one of the possible stalked eyes and grasping appendages. View the close-up photos for more detailed images.

Full dimensions are listed below.

Additional Information

Description:

Isoxys is a small Early Cambrian arthropod.

The affinity of Isoxys is uncertain because for a long time it was known only from empty carapaces. Recent descriptions of soft parts show that the frontal appendage is similar to that of some megacheiran, or “great appendage,” taxa such as Leanchoilia, Alalcomenaeus, and Yohoia (Vannier et al., 2009; García-Bellido et al., 2009a). The affinity of Megacheira as a whole is uncertain, but it has been suggested that they either sit within the stem-lineage to the euarthropods (Budd, 2002) or they are stem-lineage chelicerates (Chen et al., 2004; Edgecombe, 2010).

Arthropods are invertebrate animals with an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and paired jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Arthropoda. They are distinguished by their jointed limbs and cuticle made of chitin, often mineralised with calcium carbonate. The arthropod body plan consists of segments, each with a pair of appendages. Arthropods are bilaterally symmetrical and their body possesses an external skeleton. In order to keep growing, they must go through stages of moulting, a process by which they shed their exoskeleton to reveal a new one. Some species have wings. They are an extremely diverse group, with up to 10 million species.

Isoxys is a Euarthropod, characterized by their segmented body, chitinous cuticle forming an external skeletonthat is sometimes biomineralized, jointed limbs, well-developed sensory systems, and a life-cycle involving molting.
