Greenops widderensis

$300.00

Vendor: Stormbed Paleontological

SKU Number: SQ1370435

A complete prone and a partial cephalon and thorax of Greenops widderensis from the Middle Devonian, Widder Formation, SW. Ontario, Canada. These trilobites have become increasingly difficult to acquire due to over-collecting and the loss of accessible sites to development and restrictive laws on collecting.

The smaller specimen has perfectly preserved genal, pleural and pygidial spines. A beautiful addition for the discerning collector.

This is a beautiful specimen with the smaller trilobite having a beige color and the other a toffee brown color.

Full dimensions are listed below.

Additional Information

Greenops widderensis

Greenops had schizocroidal eyes (resembling compound eyes in insects), large genal spines and short, sharp spines at the tip of each segment of the pygidium ("tail"). Greenops lived in warm, fairly deep water. In the Hamilton Group of New York, they are found with Eldredgeops, Dipleura and Bellacartwrightia, a trilobite that resembles Greenops but has much larger pygidial spines. In Ontario, they are found in the Widder Formation, which outcrops at Arkona, where they are, by far, the dominant trilobite.
