A stunning example of a classic Middle Silurian trilobite from the famous Rochester Shale “Caleb Quarry” location near Middleport, NY.

Arctinurus boltoni is a large lichid trilobite that is known from reasonably deep water and tropical regions. All of these trilobites show indications of either minor restoration or repair due to the water saturation of the rock and the paper thin fossilization of the carapace. That said, we were hard pushed to categorically identify any restoration or repair that usually occurs on the pleural and pygidial spines.

There is indication of some work taking place on the shale to stabilize the rock, this is also expected and a normal part of the preparation process for these trilobites. This specimen is very typical of the species from Caleb Quarry at around 4 inches in size. It exhibits surface granules or tubercles and is perfectly articulated. A great American trilobite that graces the collections of museums across the world and is becoming increasingly harder to find on the open market.

Additional Information

Arctinurus was first reported in upstate New York during the construction of the Erie Canal as rock was removed from the soft Silurian shales and mudstones. Before the late 1990s, complete Arctinurus fossils were very rare. Lichids are typically spiny, their exoskeletons often have a grainy texture or have wart or spine-like tubercles.
